Label Makers: A Love Story
I have 4 label makers. Here’s why I need every single one of them.
I own 4 different label makers and I love them all. If you’re an average Joe organizing your home, you won’t need all of these; one will do! How do you know which one will best suit your needs?
Here’s a rundown of four different label makers to help you choose the best one for you!
The Cricut Joy
The Cricut Joy is my go-to. You know those high-quality vinyl labels that you often see on professional organizers’ instagram pages? This is THAT label maker. Full disclosure: making these labels is labor intensive but as an organizer, it’s one of the things that makes your work look high-end.
All Cricut products are amazing quality and you can create a lot of amazing things with the Cricut (most of which I’m clueless about), but unless you’re a serious crafter or obsessed with labels, I wouldn’t recommend this product. It's pricey and has a steep learning curve. If you don’t think it is something you’d use often, I would skip it.
Brother P-Touch Cube
I actually purchased the Brother P-Touch Cube by accident. I wanted to order the Brother P-touch CUBE Plus and I mixed them up *facepalm*. I’m not proud to admit this, but I tried (to no avail) to squeeze a 24mm tape roll into the Brother P-Touch Cube, which only allows label widths of 12mm. I finally realized my mistake and invested in the Brother P-touch CUBE Plus instead.
I still sometimes use this label maker when I’m doing a large project and have multiple team members labeling at the same time. The Brother P-Touch Cube, which has the narrower tape, is great for labeling the lip of drawers or shelves.
The Brother P-touch CUBE can either be used with batteries or a power source.
Brother P-touche CUBE Plus
This is the label maker I meant to buy. The Brother P-touch CUBE Plus can make wider labels up to 24mm tape and I use it for labeling bins or larger items. The Brother P-touch Cube Plus can also make slimmer labels, but I like to have both on hand so I can label one space while another team member labels another.
Since the Brother P-touch CUBE Plus makes wide labels on a transparent background, it is a great option for a high-end looking label if you don’t want to deal with the Cricut.
The Brother P-touch CUBE Plus needs to be charged to work, and does not use batteries.
Did I need them both? No, but it was a happy accident that I don’t regret.
Both label makers use bluetooth, which can be annoying as you often have to reconnect them. If you aren’t tech-savvy or prefer ease-of-use, I would suggest buying a handheld instead.
Brother P-touch Handheld (PTH110)
The Brother P-touch Handheld (PTH110) is a great beginner label maker because it's easy to use and besides for loading batteries, doesn’t require being tech savvy. When I first started out, I didn’t even own a label maker and I had to borrow my sister’s. She happened to own the Brother P-touch Handheld and it was a great way to break into labeling.
The Dymo LabelWriter 450 Turb0
The Dymo LabelWriter 450 Turbo is my guilty pleasure in that it serves one very specific purpose*.
I use this label maker for when I’m doing large office jobs and need to label manila file folders. If I have it on me, I use it to label other things too. Because it's big, bulky, and needs to connect to a computer, I don’t bring it to my jobs unless I know that I’m definitely going to need it. I highly recommend this product if you have a big office. Otherwise, skip it and use something else to label your manila file folders.
*This label maker has multiple uses, I just happen to only use it for one thing.
Now that you’ve got the full rundown on things, which label maker are you choosing for your next project?
Let me know, and happy labeling!
